Happiness Psychology is all the rage at the moment. Happy, positive people do better, have better lives and better relationships, apparently.

Pessimists, on the other hand, are all supposed to do very badly in their jobs. All except one. Studies show that pessimists thrive when they are lawyers. They are in their element. They actually get paid to do what they would normally do anyway – to look at the worst case scenario and to expect the worst of human nature.

Well, that's me.

I'm a lawyer – that's how I earn my living. But I'm also a painter, a photographer and a poet – that's how I keep sane. This is my experiment to see if I can beat the odds and learn how to be happy. At any rate, how to be an optimist – or at least more zen-like in my approach to life. But I would settle for being less pessimistic, too, if all else fails.
